Tips for visiting the Marmottan Monet Museum

Insider tips

Arrive right at opening

The rooms empty quickly after 10am, allowing crowd-free contemplation of the major works. You will enjoy ideal natural light and a silence conducive to emotion. This is the preferred time slot for painting enthusiasts.

Start with the Water Lilies room

This immersive space is often the most crowded; seeing it at the start of your visit guarantees a better experience. Take time to sit facing the canvases and let the colors work on your senses. The effect is powerful and memorable.

Check the temporary exhibitions

Temporary exhibits change regularly and may alter the museum's internal route. Check the program before your visit so you don't miss any exceptional loans. Booking is not mandatory but recommended to avoid queues.

Extend to Ranelagh

The neighboring garden offers a peaceful pause and a view of the neighborhood's architecture before you leave. It's the perfect opportunity to walk quietly and extend the museum's contemplative atmosphere. The passage through the Boulogne woods is also very pleasant.

Photograph the details of the frames

Period frames are part of the visual experience and deserve particular attention. They frame the canvases with an elegance that enhances the perceived value of the works. Don't limit yourself to the canvas; observe the entire museum display.

Read the notices about Berthe Morisot

The Morisot collection is often less known but essential for understanding female Impressionism. Her works dialogue perfectly with those of her male contemporaries. Take a few minutes to appreciate this too-often ignored facet of art history.

Little-known anecdotes

The stolen canvases

In 1985, nine paintings, including four by Monet, were stolen in broad daylight by the Aubervilliers gang. These masterpieces were finally recovered in Corsica in 1990, after five years of artistic pursuit that kept all of France on edge.

Michel Monet's legacy

In 1966, Claude Monet's son bequeathed his personal collection and 89 paintings by his father to the museum. This monumental legacy made it possible to build a dedicated room under the park, now emblematic of the institution.

The Donop de Monchy donation

In 1957, Victorine Donop de Monchy permanently donated eleven Impressionist paintings to the museum. Among them was the work that gave the movement its name, consolidating the Marmottan's place in the history of French art.

The Berthe Morisot collection

Thanks to the 1993 bequest, the museum became the custodian of the world's first major collection of works by Berthe Morisot. This rare collection offers unique insight into women's contribution to the Impressionist movement, often forgotten.

The building's origins

The museum occupies a former hunting pavilion bought in 1882 by Jules Marmottan. Transformed into a private mansion, this place became a temple of art, retaining its discreet architectural charm.

The Water Lilies room

Opened in 1970, this room inspired by the great decorations of the Orangerie houses the major works from Monet's final years. The total immersion allows you to experience the visual journey as the painter had imagined it.
